Allium cepa, the onion (also called bulb onion or common onion) and the shallot (Allium cepa var. aggregatum), is a monocot bulbous perennial (often biannual). It is a biennial plant but is usually grown as an annual. Modern varieties typically grow to a height of 15 to 45 cm.
